Operational History
Ever since the First Gate War broke out between the UPoS and Terran Gates, the Pelican has been the backbone of Earth’s navy. It was one of the first new class of vessels comissioned by the new Unified Planets Navy, along with the Sarkankutra Class Command Cruiser. Having seen numerous revisions and upgrades, the Pelicans now in service are far from their original ancestors. The ship’s hull needed to be retrofitted to suit new technologies such as antennas for dynamic short-warp signaling, ventral engine pods for Close-Quarter Maneuvering and additional turrets in-between armor riveting for the increasing amount of close engagements that the last war had seen. For the same reason, the large caliber, static gun implacement on the top side of the Destroyer has become largely obsolete, frequently being repurposed as railguns.
Typical Missions
| Mission Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Fleet Engagement | Serve as a frontline brawler, engaging enemy capital ships and absorbing fire while dishing out heavy damage. |
| Blockade Runner Intercept | Hunt down and neutralize enemy ships attempting to break or run a blockade. |
| Planetary Assault Support | Provide orbital fire support for ground troops and engage enemy orbital defenses. |
| Convoy Escort (High-Risk) | Protect valuable convoys through contested systems where heavy enemy resistance is expected. |
| Pirate Stronghold Attack | Lead an assault on fortified pirate bases or anchorages, capable of withstanding heavy defensive installations. |
Story Hooks
- The Ghost Fleet: A squadron of Pelican-class destroyers vanished without a trace during the Last War. Decades later, one has reappeared, adrift and silent, in a remote system. What happened to its crew, and what secrets does it hold?
- Obsolete or Overpowered?: An admiral believes the Pelican-class is outdated and wants to decommission the remaining fleet, including the players’ ship. However, a series of “accidents” befalling newer ship designs suggests sabotage. Is someone trying to keep the Pelicans in service for a hidden agenda, or is the new tech genuinely flawed?
- The Retrofit’s Secret: During a deep maintenance cycle, engineers discover unusual, undocumented modifications to the ship’s core systems, hinting at a secret purpose or a hidden faction that influenced its last refit.
- Legendary Captain’s Legacy: The players’ Pelican once served under a legendary, now-deceased captain. Old enemies (or allies) of this captain resurface, believing the ship holds a key to the captain’s lost fortune, a dangerous piece of intel, or a way to settle an old score.
- The Variant’s Burden: One of the Pelican’s weapon variants (e.g., Nuclear Missile Carrier) is deemed too dangerous or controversial by a new political regime. The crew must either comply with disarmament orders, go rogue, or find a way to prove the variant’s necessity.
