Operational History
Early Expeditions of Al-Rabata prospecting teams into deep nebula deposits allowed the company to establish extraction facilities in places where competition has not reached yet. What followed was a hasty phase of expanding into these turbulent territories, resulting in a number of sites that did have a high resource output, but failed in terms of maintainability and of course, work place safety. After only a few short years, drafting of a ship that would loiter and support such a facility were drawn up. The first Khárybdis Block I was constructed in 2438, and subsequently lost on their maiden voyage through and outlier of the Lazarus Ion Storm. Later Iterations solved a lot of the instabilities of the ship’s active radiation and matter turbulence countermeasures, which now yields the Block IV as the state-of-the-art Standby Vessel for deep nebula resource and research facilites.
Typical Missions
| Mission Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Facility Resupply & Support | Transporting personnel, vital supplies, and specialized equipment to and from remote nebula-based resource extraction or research stations. |
| Emergency Response & Repair | Acting as a first responder to facility emergencies, providing medical evacuation, damage control, and utilizing its onboard workshop for critical repairs. |
| Mobile Operations Base | Serving as a temporary forward operating base for survey teams, scientific expeditions, or resource prospecting missions deeper within nebulae. |
| Long-Duration Nebula Patrol | Conducting patrols of Al-Rabata operational areas within nebulae, offering a ready presence for assistance, light deterrence, and system monitoring. |
| Search, Rescue, & Salvage Support | Assisting in locating and recovering distressed company assets or personnel within hazardous nebula environments, or supporting salvage operations. |
Story Hooks
- The Lost Sister: Rumors surface of the original Khárybdis Block I not being entirely lost to the Lazarus Ion Storm. Perhaps it was captured, or its crew managed to make a desperate jump into uncharted territory. Al-Rabata might want the players to investigate, either to recover advanced (but flawed) technology, rescue descendants of the original crew, or silence a potential embarrassment. The ship itself could have become a nearly mythical derelict, a ‘ghost ship’ caught in a perpetual storm,
- The Maw of the Beast: An Al-Rabata research station deep within a particularly volatile nebula has gone silent. A Khárybdis-class ship sent to investigate also drops out of contact. The players are hired as a third party, perhaps with a less conspicuous vessel, to determine what happened. They might find the Khárybdis disabled but intact, its crew struggling against an unknown entity or environmental phenomenon
