Profile
The Unified Planets Navy (UPN) is the shield and sword of the Unified Planets of Sol. While the UPoS government handles the bureaucracy of a metafederal republic, the UPN is the tangible expression of its will.
Forged in the fires of the Gate Wars, the UPN has evolved from a ragtag collection of drafted civilian vessels into one of the most disciplined and technologically advanced armadas in the galaxy. Its primary mandate is the protection of UPoS citizens, the enforcement of interstellar trade lanes, and the maintenance of the Serengeti Line—the tense border guarding against the Terran Empire.
Culturally, the UPN is distinct from the civilian government. It is rigid, hierarchical, and steeped in a tradition of “The Long Watch.” While generally viewed as heroes by the core worlds, fringe colonies sometimes view UPN fleets as looming oppressors, enforcing central regulations with the threat of orbital bombardment.
Story
The Great Reforging
Following the First Gate War (2318 - 2329), UPoS leadership realized that a “militia navy” was insufficient for galactic governance. The Naval Standardization Act of 2335 dissolved the private colonial flotillas and integrated them into a central command structure. This caused decades of friction, but by the time the Second Gate War broke out, the UPN was a unified fighting force.
The Stalemate Era
Since the ceasefire of 2420, the UPN has transitioned into a Cold War footing. The glory days of large-scale fleet engagements like the Battle at the Twin Gates are over. Today, the story of the UPN is one of espionage, border skirmishes, and “Show of Force” maneuvers. Officers who once trained for total war now train for de-escalation and proxy conflicts in the Kryx Nebula Fields, where they fight undeclared skirmishes against Confederate privateers.
Philosophy
“Ad astra, fortiter”
The UPN acts under the Doctrine of talk soft but carry a big stick. They metaphorically are the leashed hound of the Prime House of the Unified Planets. They are distinctly operating under tight rules of engagement in non-hostile territory and rarely show up to planetary unrest unless there are implications of a nation wide organization. They only deploy on sanctioned mandates from the Prime House, or on direct provocations to national security such as the Badigo Uprising.
Relationships
| Faction | Relationship Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Unified Planets of Sol | Subordinate | The UPN serves the government, though High Command frequently lobbies aggressively for budget increases, claiming “The Empire is always watching.” |
| Confederacy of Terran Gates | Hostile / Cold War | The enemy. Professional respect exists between senior officers of both navies, but they are trained to destroy one another on sight if the ceasefire breaks. |
| Lanternyard Incorporated | ||
| Free People of Badigo | Threat | Viewed as domestic terrorists. The UPN is currently tasked with a blockade operation in the Albion sector to starve out their insurrection. |
Organization
Headquarters: Home Base I, a massive orbital fortress-station orbiting Earth (Sol III/Gaia System).
Leader(s): Fleet Admiral Vance Harlock, a veteran of the Second Gate War who bears a cybernetic eye from the Battle of Twin Gates.
Prominent Members:
- Rear Admiral Siobhan Kovic: Commander of the 7th Fleet, currently patrolling the Serengeti Line.
- Director Cole: Head of UPN Naval Intelligence (ONI), a shadowy figure rarely seen without a datapad.
The Fleets
The Navy is divided into three primary operational branches:
- Home Fleet (The Iron Wall): Stays within the Sol and Gaia sectors to protect the capital.
- Expeditionary Fleets: The active armadas patrolling the Kryx Nebula and the Serengeti Line.
- Logistics & Support: The massive train of fuel tankers, repair docks, and hospital ships that keep the war machine running.
Forces and Resources
- Capital Ships: The UPN prides itself on the “Titan-Class” Dreadnoughts, massive carriers capable of launching hundreds of strike craft.
- Wolfhound Destroyers: Fast, maneuverable escorts designed to hunt submarines and blockade runners.
- The Void Marines: The infantry arm of the Navy, specialized in boarding actions and orbital drops. They are known for their heavy, sealed power armor.
- Jetgate Control: The UPN maintains absolute control over all civilian and military Jetgate travel within UPoS space.
Methods
- Gunboat Diplomacy: Parking a Destroyer in orbit of a rebellious colony to remind them of UPoS law.
- The Serengeti Patrol: Constant, rotating patrols along the DMZ to detect Imperial cloaking tech.
- Blockade: Cutting off trade routes to non-compliant systems (currently used against Badigo).
Background
Originating from the desperate defense forces of Earth during the relocation era, the UPN has absorbed the martial traditions of dozens of cultures. Officers still wear the dress blues inspired by Old Earth naval traditions, specifically drawing lineage from the ancient wet-navies of the Pacific.
Additional Details
CLEARANCE LEVEL: CRIMSON Naval Intelligence is currently funding a black-ops project known as [Project Chimera] . It involves the weaponization of [Pretech AI Fragments] found in the Urkantone archives. If the Senate finds out, Admiral Harlock will be [court martialed] immediately.
