The UPN Paragon Dawn is a veteran freighter, a workhorse of the 102nd Nibbellean Patrol that has seen more star systems than most fleet officers. Under the steady command of its long-term charter captain, José Saramago, the ship has become a reliable, if unremarkable, fixture in the UPN’s logistical chain. Currently, it’s on a routine supply run to the Lucido Quarantine Anchorage, a tense and isolated outpost in a system still reeling from a historic tragedy.

Crew
| Role | Name | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Captain | José Saramago | An independent Freighter Captain chartered by the UPN. His contract has been running for 25 years, making him more familiar with the Paragon Dawn than anyone. He’s quiet, professional, and treats the ship like his own property. |
| First Mate | Commander Anne Enright | A career UPN officer assigned to ensure Navy protocol is followed. She’s torn between her duty and a growing, unspoken affection for the grizzled, independent captain. |
| Engineer | Chief Paul Wilson | Transferred from the UPN Ennead as punishment for insubordination. He’s a brilliant but cynical engineer who hates his “babysitting” assignment on a freighter and clashes frequently with Captain Saramago over non-standard repairs. |
| Medical Officer | Dr. Lara Adrian | Bored out of their mind on what should be a milk run. They spend most of their time reading, but their sharp eyes don’t miss the undercurrents of tension among the crew. |
| Pilot | Ensign Ardal O’Hanlon | First Deployment in the UPN. He’s eager to please but nervous, especially given the ship’s current assignment in the notorious Lucido system. |

Operational History
Commissioned shortly before the end of the Second Gate War, the Paragon Dawn spent its early years ferrying supplies to UPN garrisons along the newly established Serengeti Line. Several years after the war, it was transferred to the 102nd Nibbellean Patrol. The faded linden leaf painted on its hull is a relic from its service to the Patrol, which has been gradually taken apart through the last decade in favor of the UPN 3rd Fleet. Captain Saramago, who took command just after the war, grew fond of the people in the Patrol and never bothered to remove it, but also never saw it important enough to renew the paint job.
For the last 20 years, the ship has been attached to various patrols within the Albion Sector. It has a clean, if unspectacular, service record, marked by reliability rather than heroics. It has survived pirate encounters, navigated treacherous asteroid fields, and delivered critical aid during colonial disasters, all without much fanfare.

Story Hooks
-
The Smuggler’s Dilemma: A desperate prospector from Beaven Point secretly contacts Captain Saramago, offering a fortune in rare gemstones to smuggle him and a sensitive data slate out of the system, bypassing the UPN quarantine checkpoint. This puts the captain’s pragmatism directly at odds with Commander Enright’s duty.
-
Sabotage from Within: Chief Wilson, bitter about his assignment, discovers a critical flaw in the ship’s life support that he could exploit. An agent of the One Earth Government (OEG), hearing of his insubordination, reaches out and tries to recruit him to sabotage the Paragon Dawn while it’s docked at the quarantine anchorage, creating a major diversion.
-
The Unexpected Find: While unloading cargo, the crew discovers a crate not on the official manifest. Inside is advanced OEG surveillance equipment or, even worse, components for a small-scale atmospheric device. It’s clear a spy has compromised the supply chain, and the saboteur could be anywhere—at the Shari depot, or even aboard the Paragon Dawn itself.
