The port side is heavily pitted and scored from micrometeoroid impacts, giving it a perpetually sand-blasted appearance that the deck crews have long since given up on buffing out. The ship’s name is stenciled in plain, blocky, black letters beneath the bridge viewport.

Crew
| Role | Name | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Captain | Keith Jarret | Started career as an Engineer, then slipped into command roles over his service. He is pragmatic and weary, viewing his post at Lucido as a necessary but soul-crushing final assignment before retirement. He trusts his ship and his crew implicitly. |
| First Mate | John McLaughlin | Likes to watch mine deployments. He finds a grim beauty in the silent, methodical expansion of the quarantine field. He is the ship’s disciplinarian and the one who deals with the constant friction with the Beaven Point miners. |
| Engineer | Cathrine Mingus | Battles 24/7 with the Deployment Plant. The constant demand for mines and the system’s age means she and her team are in a perpetual state of troubleshooting. She has a deep-seated hatred for the HMC corporation’s design choices. |
| Medical Officer | Dr. Paul Metheny | ”Service Related Injury” is his new favorite phrase. Deals with an abnormally high rate of stress-induced illnesses, minor injuries from navigating the cluttered ship, and the occasional catastrophic accident from the mine assembly facility. He’s become an expert in zero-g first aid. |
| Pilot | Placeholder | Good friend of Gordon Davis, the pilot of the UPN Cahokia, and they often share encrypted comms to complain about their respective captains and the general state of the Lucido system. |
Cargo Hold
Crates of chemical precursors for explosives, shielded containers of fissile materials for mine cores, and stacks of guidance systems and sensor packages leave little room for crew comforts. This primary manifest is supplemented by standard UPN supplies, spare parts, and whatever contraband the crew manages to barter for on Beaven Point.
Operational History
Originally commissioned to lay defensive fields along the Serengeti Line during the tense ceasefire after the Second Gate War, the Query is one of the oldest Ithaca-class ships still in active service. It was refitted and reassigned to the Lucido Quarantine Task Force immediately following the terrorist attack. For years, its sole purpose has been to build, deploy, and maintain the ever-expanding minefield that seals off Lucido Prime from the rest of the system.

Story Hooks
- Sabotaged Payload: Chief Mingus discovers that a recent shipment of mine precursors from the UPN Paragon Dawn has been subtly tampered with. The resulting mines are duds. Was it corporate sabotage, OEG interference, or something else? They must identify the faulty components before they unknowingly create a hole in the quarantine field.
- Miner’s Gambit: A desperate prospector from Beaven Point offers the crew an outrageous sum to “temporarily” deactivate a small section of the minefield. His ship, containing the single biggest gemstone find in a decade, drifted into the barrier after an engine failure. He needs a window to retrieve it, but the UPN would never authorize it, and the risk of creating a permanent breach is immense.
Additional Details
- The ship’s mess hall has a single, heavily reinforced viewport that looks out over the deployment bay. It’s an unofficial tradition for off-duty crew to gather there and watch the mines drift silently into the void, a somber ritual known as “watching the garden grow.”
- Due to the constant vibration from the mine assembly plant, there’s a persistent, low hum that resonates through the ship’s decks. Veteran crew members claim they can tell what stage of mine construction the plant is in just by the pitch of the hum.
