Special Features
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Grav-Metric Auspex | Modified sensor suite specifically calibrated to detect mass anomalies in dense asteroid fields. It grants advantage on Navigation checks within the Belt but is prone to interference from radiation. |
| Brig “The Cooler” | Two of the modular crew cabins have been converted into holding cells for detained pirates or unruly miners. |
Crew
The crew is a friction-heavy mix of SecCom corporate officers and local specialist hires.
| Role | Name | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Captain | Rob Brandsma | SecCom Careerist. A laid back officer who views this assignment as a relaxing holiday and a way to boost his image in Sector Command. |
| First Mate | Elliane Bernhard | Ex-Confederate Navy. A veteran of the Gate Wars. She is grim, pragmatic, and the only one the crew truly fears. |
| Engineer | Mike Bayer | Poached from Kobashi. A brilliant but neurotic technician. He treats the Contender like a living being and is constantly stressed by the damage the asteroid belt does to his “beautiful engines.” He constantly petitions the Captain to stop entering dust clouds. |
| Medical Officer | Onno Aerden | Combat Veteran. A SecCom lifer who has seen too many frontier wars. He runs a “pharmacy” on the side, selling high-grade painkillers to injured miners at Beaven Point, which gives him excellent intel on the station. |
| Pilot | Roger Scruton | Chartered Local. Born on Beaven Point. He is a scruffy, cynicism-filled pilot who knows every rock in the Glintring. The Captain hates his lax uniform discipline, but Scruton is the only reason the ship hasn’t crashed into an asteroid yet. |
Cargo Hold
Status: 60% Full Manifest Summary:
- Confiscated Contraband: 4 Crates of unlicensed mining explosives, 1 crate of “Red Sand” (a local narcotic), and a locked case of unregistered gemstones seized from “claim jumpers.”
- Spare Parts: Excessive amount of air filters and intake manifolds for the CADR engines (due to dust clogging).
- Ammunition: Extra 60mm Flak rounds.
- Provisions: High-quality SecCom rations (which the crew trades with locals for fresh food).
Operational History
- 2428: Commissioned at Lima Forgeyards. Served briefly in the Core Systems engaging in anti-piracy operations.
- 2430: Transferred to the Albion Sector following the Lucido Cataclysm.
- 2431 - Present: Leased to the Lucido Miners Guild.
- Notable Action: The Contender is credited with the destruction of the OEG Corvette Silent Sorrow at Findring’s Crossing in 2432. This victory cemented SecCom’s contract with the Guild.
Typical Missions
| Mission Type | Description |
|---|---|
| The “Glintring” Run | Escorting the massive Guild mining barges (like the IS Karmagee) through the asteroid belt. The Contender flies point defense, blasting debris and deterring claim jumpers. |
| Claim Enforcement | Responding to calls where independent miners have “accidentally” drifted into Guild territory. The Contender arrives, powers up weapons, and “persuades” them to leave or surrender their haul. |
| Customs Inspection | Randomly boarding ships entering or leaving Beaven Point to search for smuggled OEG supplies or stolen gems. |
Story Hooks
- The Insider: Pilot Roger Scruton has a gambling debt on Beaven Point. He might be tempted to leak the Contender’s patrol route to a pirate crew, planning for them to hit a specific cargo transfer while he “accidentally” suffers an engine malfunction.
- The Contraband: The “locked case of unregistered gemstones” in the cargo hold is actually a stash of OEG data crystals disguised as gems. First Mate Bernhard suspects this and is trying to decide whether to report it to SecCom (who might bury it) or investigate it herself.
- Mutiny in the Air: Engineer Mike Bayer discovers a critical fault in the main drive that requires a full dockyard repair. Captain Brandsma refuses to leave the station undefended during the “Gem Rush” and orders a jury-rigged fix. The crew is on edge, fearing the ship might blow up if they fire the main guns.
Additional Details
- The Dust: Despite the air scrubbers, a fine layer of grey asteroid dust coats everything inside the ship, even the mess hall.
- The Mascot: The crew has adopted a “Rock-Rat” (a small silicon-based vermin found on asteroids) named “Spud.” The Captain keeps trying to exterminate it; the crew keeps hiding it.
- Reputation: On Beaven Point, the ship is hated. Independent miners spit on the floor when the crew walks into a bar. They are seen as corporate bullies protecting the Guild’s monopoly.
